Jussi Reijonen

fretted and fretless guitar, oud

Born in Rovaniemi, a small town on the Arctic Circle in northern Finland, fretted/fretless guitarist and oudist JUSSI REIJONEN is truly the product of a world with few frontiers. Having grown up moving back and forth between Finnish Lapland, the Middle East, and East Africa, and currently living in Boston MA, USA, Jussi has spent his life soaking up the sounds, scents and shades of Nordic, Middle Eastern, African, and now American culture, which are all reflected in his music.

Along his path, Jussi has worked – as bandleader, sideman, composer or arranger – with numerous front row artists both in and outside his native Finland, and has performed extensively in Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Germany, France, Lebanon, Canada and the United States. After relocating to the US in 2008, he has collaborated with the likes of renowned jazz drummer Jack deJohnette, flamenco cantaor legend Pepe de Lucia, Spanish multi-Grammy-award-winning producer and flamenco guitarist Javier Limón, Palestinian oud/violin master Simon Shaheen, fretless guitar pioneer David Fiuczynski, jazz/fusion drummer Dave Weckl, Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist Arto Tunçboyacian, Turkey’s gypsy clarinet legend Hüsnü Senlendirici, and Lebanese nay virtuoso and multi-instrumentalist Bassam Saba, to name a few.

Reijonen’s original music draws from a wide pool of influences and experiences gathered growing up on four different continents; in both his original compositions and his playing, the open spaces and silences of Scandinavia effortlessly rub shoulders with the maqamat of the Arab world and the rhythmic richness of India and West Africa, creating a truly enchanting musical mosaic.

Jussi’s Independent Music Award-nominated debut album “un” was released to great critical acclaim in early 2013 on the unmusic label.

“Mad Professor products are superb sounding and built like tanks! I have had the same Delay and Overdrive on my Board for 15 years, I’m a creature of habit, the Royal Blue Overdrive and Deep Blue Delay have made them redundant! Proud to be using the Old School 51, a hugely versatile and dynamic amp and the perfect partner for a pedalboard that helps me perform a legacy of almost 50 years of MAN music!”

Jan Trygg

Jan Trygg plays guitar in the doom sludge band Morbid Evils. The band plays in G-tuning (with 6 string guitars) so there’s a special need for sustain and powerful fuzz. Mad Professors Fire Red Fuzz is all about getting that fat sludgy and muddy sound.

Jan has shared the stage with such artists as Eyehategod (US), Conan (UK), Mudhoney (US), Voivod (CAN) and Entombed A.D. (SWE). He toured in the summer of 2013 as the live-guitarist for the legendary stoner rock band Xysma.

Andy Reiss

Guitarist Andy Reiss has now been an active member of the Nashville community for more than 35 years. He left his hometown of San Francisco to pursue his passion for music as a career in 1980. He was brought up in a household listening to mainly traditional classical music (he even has an ancestor that was a German composer and guitarist in the 1700s!) He began his formal music education with the piano at age 7, moving to the guitar at 10. Being lucky enough to have grown up in in San Francisco during the 1960s, he would forever be influenced by the thriving music scene of the time. Some of the many concerts that were complete eye-opening experiences were B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, and of course, pyschedelic luminaries such as The Grateful Dead and The Jefferson Airplane. This is also when he discovered jazz, and his guitar work became heavily influenced by greats such as Grant Green and Charlie Christian.

After arriving in Nashville, he was fortunate enough to have two influential A-Team advocates, the legendary producer and steel guitarist Pete Drake, and the visionary Harold Bradley, the guitarist who, along with his brother Owen, built the first recording studio on Nashville’s Music Row, and served as a long time President of the local Musician’s Union. Andy’s first recording session was for the actor Slim Pickens, a session that was an overwhelming initiation, involving many A-Team pickers such as Drake, Charlie McCoy, Bob Moore, Pete Wade, Pig Robbins and the Jordanaires.

He has since become a studio mainstay, playing on hundreds of records, with artists including Miranda Lambert, John Oates, Amy Grant, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers and Leon Russell. Returning to his early jazz influences, he also has recorded with many jazz greats, including Pete Christlieb, Beegee Adair, Benny Golson and as a member of the Lori Mechem Quartet. He has also toured many years with both the legendary Slim Whitman and Reba McEntire, and is one of the first Time Jumpers, having been with the group since 1999.

Andy has also “given back” to the community with a leadership role in the Nashville Musician’s Association, and as an educator with the Nashville Jazz Workshop and other venues.

The one I really love is the Royal Blue. It’s a perfect front end for my Little Walter amps, great control over the gain levels, and the EQ is perfect. It is a love match!

Alan Nimmo (King King)

Alan is the front man and lead guitarist for King King, Winner of the BRITAIN’S BEST BLUES BAND award at both 2012, 2013 and 2014’s British Blues Awards!

Softly softly” is not a maxim that King King are familiar with. Since surging into life last year they have barely stopped for breath, and their electrifying sound and scorching live shows have generated more of a thunderous roar than a buzz.

This is a band which knows how to make an entrance. Fronted by charismatic bluesman Alan Nimmo, their exhilarating debut at last year’s Monaghan Blues Festival created such a stir that it prompted organizer Somhairle MacCognil to remark: “King King aren’t just playing the festival. Word is that King King ARE the festival”. With a reception like this there’s no surprise that the phone has been ringing off the hook since, and the last year has seen a frenetic schedule of gigs and festival appearances which have received outstanding praise and added plenty of new blood to their burgeoning army of followers.

With an almost instant reputation which spread like wildfire through the blues scene and a diary fit to burst, you’d be forgiven for thinking that King King might have wanted a bit of a rest. You’d be wrong. Apparently imbued with sufficient energy to power a small town, the band also found time to get into the studio, the result being their debut EP ‘Broken Heal’. Produced alongside the team behind the Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs and the Editors, the EP instantly received a gleaming review from Blues Matters Magazine, including remarks on it’s “emotive lyrics” and “stirring guitar work”. The band had barely left the studio when they began to receive airplay on radio stations across the UK, Europe and the US. Listeners to Radio 2’s Paul Jones were treated to a taste when the DJ got his hands on the band’s stunning ‘Heart Without A Soul’ and introduced it to the masses. Little wonder then that organizers of the celebrated Blues On The Farm festival had a listen and were so impressed that they made room for King King – despite having already filled the bill for the event.

Thundering on, the summer saw King King descending on the celebrated Maryport Blues Festival, where they played the main stage to rapturous effect. One press review effused: “How do you top an evening of music dominated by the wonderful Jethro Tull? With King King, that’s how.” Yeah, they’ll get you like that.

Pretty impressive stuff for a band less than a year old. So what’s at the root of all this commotion? Well, aside from seemingly boundless impetus, the band is certainly not lacking in pedigree.

Leading the charge is the aforementioned Alan, a frontman famed almost as much for his contagious energy as his dazzling guitar work. Widely known across the UK and Europe for his pivotal role with the award-winning Nimmo Brothers, Alan’s full-blooded style, technical brilliance and impassioned vocals combine to hit all the right buttons and reach spots that many others can only aspire to.

Drawing on their combined talent whilst cherry-picking the hottest influences, the band has pushed boundaries to craft a fresh, powerful new angle on blues rock which is as infectious as it is accomplished

Erja Lyytinen

Voted #1 International Solo Artist, Blues Matters Writer’s Poll 2015

Voted Artist of the Year, Finnish Blues Awards 2015

Take one part blues traditionalist, blend it with a forward-thinking music academy graduate, serve with a side order of skill and a garnish of Nordic beauty. What have you got? Singer/guitarist Erja Lyytinen, a.k.a. “the Finnish slide goddess” (The Blues Magazine).

Erja Lyytinen is an extraordinary Blues guitarist in more ways than one. She knows all the right bends, and she is a great slide player, too, but what sets her apart is her judicious use of effect pedals to spruce up her tone. Most Blues-anoraks swear by the old saying that “the tone’s in the fingers”. Erja’s tone is in her fingers, too, but that doesn’t stop her from adding a little extra spice with a few well-chosen effects.
